Abstract Business Engineering

Three year degree course with graduation to Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) Businessl Engineering. In every year there are two theory blocks of twelve weeks at the ASW. In the remaining time the students gain practical experiences in the cooperating training company. The tuition fees are paid by the training company. Usually the students also receive a salary.

Business Engineering degree course (Bachelor of Engineering)

With the setting up of the Business Engineering degree course, the ASW Saarland University of Cooperative Education has reacted to the needs of the training companies for  well-qualified young people in technical and natural sciences and business. These engineers can adopt an integrative role at the interface between technology and business and experience a high degree of practical orientation in the course of their study.

In the Business Engineering degree course, the core competences from both study areas of the ASW Saarland University of Cooperative Education are merged for the design of a course of study that with its integrative approach is more than the sum of its parts.

Objective of the degree course

The objective of the Business Engineering degree course is to train practically oriented engineers in three years who at the sensitive interface between technology and business in the company keep the costs, the sales, the market and the technical feasibility in mind and who coordinate and improve these partially competing areas.

The dual or two-track training concept of a university for cooperative education is ideally suited for this purpose.

After the three years of study, the graduates have the necessary knowledge in the areas of mechanical engineering and business administration and overall interrelated subjects such as project management, logistics, controlling, technical sales as well as basic professional experience that cannot be obtained in this specific form in any other course of studies.

The technical and business basic subjects are taught in the first two years of the degree course. These are then supplemented in the main course by the interdisciplinary subjects that are characteristic for the professional competence of the industrial engineers. The transfer of key qualifications listed under the title "Work methods and management techniques" that, as well as foreign languages, are an important foundation for modern engineers for professional success represents an important supplement in this degree course.

Lecturers from universities and from practical professional experience are recruited for teaching the course contents at the ASW University of Cooperative Education. This differentiated teaching staff guarantees both current practical experience as well as scientific reference in the teaching sessions. The intensive support by the course management promotes the study success. The use of contemporary teaching and learning methods promotes the students' own activity and extends the qualification profile.

Structure and sequence

Practical experience and training companies      

The students are permanent employees of one of the training companies at the University of Cooperative Education during their three year study period.

The students are in the company for half the time and participate in specific projects. In the remaining time, they obtain the knowledge at the University of Cooperative Education that they need for the tasks of an industrial engineer.

The company-based part of the course takes place in the company that the student has concluded a training and study contract with. It helps the student to apply the theoretical knowledge obtained to practical work. The capabilities obtained in this way and the knowledge gained about the company structures and processes due to the deployment in the company enable the graduate after completion of the study to be deployed as an already relatively experienced employee.

Training Schedule

The timelines and the contents of the practical training are roughly specified in the training schedule so that optimum meshing of theory and practice is guaranteed.

Approval and application procedure

The prerequisite for any study at the University of Cooperative Education is acquisition of a general university entrance qualification, technical college entrance qualification or a successful master craftsman examination. Further training equivalent to a master craftsman examination as well as 3 years of professional experience after 2 years of training with passing of an admission test are also acceptable.
Whoever would like to study at the ASW Saarland University of Cooperative Education must apply to a training company for a study place with reference to the appropriate field of study.

Completion of the study

Differentiated examinations are taken at the end of the theory blocks in the modules that document the competence acquisition.

During the study, a six-week practical paper is written in the fifth practical block and the Bachelor's thesis is written in the sixth practical block.

After successful completion of the three year degree course, the student is awarded the professional title Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) Business Engineering.
